Canva lays off 22% of its workforce; 1,270 people

This was probably already coming. Sad day for many folks but frankly AI put in a strong pivot in the world of design.

Pure digital b2c apps built pre-ai are facing a reckoning. Their features are getting disaggregated in a weekend app that's good enough for 90% of users.

Most of the value of these apps don't come from the actual features though. It networking effects, brand, ecosystems.

It always been easy for startup to build a better widget. But that's not what lets you win.

What networking effects or ecosystem does Canva have?

I remember saying a cautious "godspeed" when canva acquired Serif Affinity, might have been a bit shortsighted. I hope they didn't get caught in the crossfire but I'm not optimistic.
